1. Titanfall

DOWNLOAD

TitanfallRelease date: 14 March

Platforms: Xbox One, PC

One of the most important Xbox One console exclusives, Titanfall is a first-person shooter based in a futuristic world of mechs. However, you'll play as both one of these giant metal monsters and a vulnerable little fleshy footsoldier. One is powerful, the other is fast and nimble thanks to a jetpack - able to double jump and take cover unlike a mech.

What's really interesting about Titanfall, though, is how it melds multi-player and single player gameplay. It's an online-only game, but incorporates story missions and single player-style events. It's one of the few games in our list that is not cross-platform, so Xbox One owners should take note of Titanfall.

2. Watch Dogs

DOWNLOAD
Release date: March
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360

Ubisoft's Watch Dogs is a game that was meant to be released in 2013 alongside the PS4 and Xbox One. A brand new IP, Watch Dogs is an open world game with roleplaying and stealth elements.

It's comparable with Deus Ex in some respects, letting you get through situations in different ways based on the skills of your character.

3. Destiny
DOWNLOAD

Release date: 9 September

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3

People are excited about Destiny because it comes from Bungie, the developer behind the original Halo games. Just like Halo, it's a futuristic first-person shooter.

Such basic building blocks may encourage comparisons to Titanfall, but Destiny is less about mechanised infantry, and more alien races with sci-fi powers. As is becoming a trend for 2014, it melds elements of first-person and multiplayer games. Bungie describes Destiny as a 'shared world' experience, where you'll be paired with other players for missions. You will be able to play with friends, but Bungie says it wants to eliminate the lobby 'waiting room' of other multiplayer games.

4. Metal Gear Solid V

DOWNLOAD
Release date: 21 March

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360

Hideo Kojima returns once more with another Metal Gear Solid game – except this time it's two games. Metal Gear Solid V is going to be released in two instalments, called Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. The former acts as the prologue for The Phantom Pain, and it's the one we'll definitely see released in 2014.

Like other Metal Gear games, Ground Zeroes is a cover and stealth-based shooter.

5. The Elder Scrolls: Online
DOWNLOAD

Release date: 4 April (June for consoles)
Platforms: PC, Mac, Xbox One, PS4

Since the early 90s when the series started, The Elder Scrolls games have all been single-player. The Elder Scrolls: Online changes all that. It's a fairly traditional MMORPG game, and will cost £8.99 a month just like World of Warcraft.

It's set in the same world as Skyrim, Oblivion et al, but takes place a thousand years before the action of Skyrim, the last game in the series. The Elder Scrolls: Online has a particular focus on PvP combat, which has obviously never been part of the series before.  Some of you may be pining for another single-player Elder Scrolls romp, but you can't deny that this is a universe that fits in perfectly with the MMORPG style.

6. The Division

DOWNLOAD
Release date: End of 2014
Platforms: Xbox One , PS4, PC

Ubisoft is so busy with Watch Dogs and its now-yearly instalment of Assassin’s Creed that is easy to forget that Tom Clancy’s The Division is also slated for a 2014 release. The online, open world RPG was originally expected to launch only on next gen consoles but the uproar from PC gamers means you are going to be able to play it with the keyboard and mouse as well.

The lethal virus outbreak story is a tried and tested narrative and the third-person action is based around familiar tactical, cover based combat. However, there’s some interesting SmartGlass integration and if Ubisoft can successfully blend single and online multiplayer elements, it could have another stunning game on its hands.

7. Thief

DOWNLOAD
Release date: 28 February
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

The original Thief games, released in the 90s, started many people's love affairs with stealth games. But it has been years since the series was a critical darling.

However, the next-gen instalment looks like it returns to a style of the early games. You need to get hands-on with your environment, taking out lights so that you can slink away into the darkness, away from the eyes of your enemies. It's about pickpocketing, darkness and arrows in necks.

8. Dark Souls II

DOWNLOAD
Release date: March
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3

One of the few high-profile games of next year that will only (so far) come to older-generation consoles, Dark Souls II is a game that doesn't need to rely on flashy graphics. The two games to date in this 'series', Demon Souls and Dark Souls, have gained a keen audience thanks to their foreboding atmosphere and incredibly harsh (but fair) difficulty.

The difficulty is such a big part of the Dark Souls appeal that when one of the game's directors called Dark Souls II “accessible”, there was a fan outcry. Previews of the game suggest some elements may be even meaner than ever, though.

9. Mario Kart 8

DOWNLOAD
Release date: 'Spring' 2014
Platforms: Wii U

The Wii U is not a console that's going to be remembered as a smash hit. However, there are a few exciting titles coming in 2014.

Our favourite is Mario Kart 8. And it is... Mario Kart. Except this time there are gliding, hover car and underwater abilities in the cars. And, of course, there's some next-gen gloss applied. However, the appeal of Mario Kart remains what it has always been – the pure fun of it.

10. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare

DOWNLOAD
Release date: February 18
Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox 360

Popcap's Plants vs. Zombies and its sequel are top-down casual games – closest in genre to tower defence titles. However, Garden Warfare is completely different. It's a third-person action game in which you take on the role of either a plant or a zombie, letting you get closer to the action than ever before in the series.

It looks like great fun, especially when you consider getting friends involved, but will it be as much of a smash as the classic mobile games?
